Our journey treads off the conventional paths onto gravel, twee-spoor, and trails through the mountains and sands, requiring a vehicle that can handle the rough—either a 4x4 or 4x2 with high clearance, towing an off-road camper if you wish. The campsites we've chosen are unadorned and deeply immersed in nature, with a few offering the raw beauty of completely wild camping, without any amenities. These are our well-kept secrets, places we've returned to repeatedly for their unparalleled solitude and beauty.

Our departure is at the crack of dawn from Clanwilliam, swiftly transitioning from paved roads to the rugged terrain that defines this adventure. Spanning approximately 900 kilometers round trip from Cape Town, we navigate the Tankwa Karoo's core, concluding four days later in Ceres. Along the way, we'll explore two nature reserves, soaking in the vast expanses of the Karoo and uncovering its secluded wonders.

This excursion is self-sufficient, encouraging a spirit of independence and camaraderie. We'll offer a suggested menu as the departure date draws near. Since opportunities to purchase provisions are sparse, be sure to pack enough firewood for the initial segment of the trip, and stock up on all necessities beforehand to avoid any shortages.

• A CATHSSETA-qualified guide with many years of experience
• Qualified Wilderness First Responder First Aider (Level 3) and advanced First Aid Kit

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

• A fully serviced reliable vehicle in very good condition.
• Enough fuel for 600km (mainly gravel track), tire repair kit, extra spare tire if possible. The gravel tracks are notorious for tire damage.
• All your water, meals, drinks, and snacks.
• Firewood (Lots!)
