WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT

Welcome to our first “Stars and Silence Tour” - a truly special Waypoint Adventures expedition through some of the quietest, darkest, and most spectacular landscapes in South Africa.

This 9-day self-drive overland journey takes us deep into the wide-open spaces of the Western Cape and Great Karoo, where the world slows down, the roads stretch endlessly across vast horizons, and the night skies come alive with more stars than most people have ever seen.

Our adventure begins near Montagu, where the convoy gathers and the journey into the Karoo wilderness begins. From here we leave the busy world behind and travel across magnificent mountain passes and remote gravel roads into the vast open landscapes of Anysberg Nature Reserve — a place where silence truly has a presence of its own.

As the expedition continues, we travel through dramatic mountain terrain toward the famous Seweweekspoort, one of the most breathtaking geological corridors in South Africa. Towering rock walls and winding gravel roads guide us deeper into the Klein Karoo, where we overnight in beautiful remote locations surrounded by mountains and endless skies.

From here we push northward into the immense landscapes of Karoo National Park, where the stillness of the semi-desert surrounds us. This is a place of big skies, ancient geology, incredible wildlife, and sunsets that seem to last forever. At night the true magic of the Karoo reveals itself — a sky overflowing with stars, galaxies, and constellations stretching from horizon to horizon.

The journey then continues to Sutherland, South Africa’s famous astronomy town and home to some of the clearest night skies in the world. Here, under conditions that astronomers travel across the globe to experience, we enjoy one of the greatest luxuries of modern life: true silence and darkness.

Our final night takes us deep into the remote Tankwa Karoo, one of the most untouched and mysterious regions in the country. Here the silence is almost tangible, broken only by the wind across the plains and the distant sounds of nature. It is the perfect place to pause, look up, and truly appreciate the incredible universe above us.

Throughout this expedition we will explore remote gravel roads, hidden valleys, vast plateaus, and spectacular mountain landscapes while visiting places that few travellers ever see. This tour is not about rushing from one destination to the next — it is about experiencing the beauty of stillness, the power of vast landscapes, and the wonder of the night sky.

• A CATHSSETA-qualified guide with many years of experience
• Qualified Wilderness First Responder (Level 3) with advanced First Aid kit
• A personalized tour magazine
• Pre-paid Camping, Park, and Entrance Fees (when accommodated inside the park)
• Radios for inter-vehicle communication
• Advanced recovery gear
• Printed maps, photos, and a short trip video

• A fully serviced, reliable vehicle in excellent condition
  • Enough fuel for 550 km (mainly off-road with some sand driving)
  • All your water (LOTS), meals, drinks, and snacks
  • All camping gear
  • A basic First Aid kit (we carry an advanced kit)
  • Recovery gear (kinetic rope, shackles, etc.)
  • Firewood (as much as you can squeeze in)

Please note that Park fees and entrance fees are included when staying inside parks but excluded when staying outside the parks.
